Adelaide SQL Server User Group

Welcome

Welcome to the Adelaide PASS group - covering SQL Server and every aspect of the Microsoft Data Platform and Data Analytics space. You can find us on the 3rd Wednesday of the month, at the Microsoft offices, Level 12, 147 Pirie St.

There's a link below to get on the mailing list. This is a mailchimp list, rather than the one that PASS handles.

We use EventBrite for meeting registrations - please look at adssug.eventbrite.com for a list of our meetings.

Many years ago, we used sqlserver.org.au, and you can see an archive of events on that site - but the Adelaide mailing list from there hasn't been used for some time.

Now, a quick word about privacy...

The details of event registrations are held with EventBrite, and I use that to update my EventBrite contacts, which is then used to update a mailchimp list for sending emails about the group. If you ever want to be removed from either my EventBrite contact list or the mailchimp list, please just let me know (rob at lobsterpot.com.au). I do this for you and will do my best to keep your privacy private.

Deep Learning with the Microsoft Data Platform
Deep Learning has been the focus of much hype in recent years. It's the technology behind self-driving cars, Cortana, Google Translate, Alpha Go, and most of the other big advances in AI in recent memory. You could be forgiven for thinking that Deep Learning is just for academics and computer science PhDs, or that only big companies with big data and big budgets can use it. This is the case no longer! The three messages James will set out to convince you of are: It's here! Deep Learning is not vapourware, it's not some theoretical construct that only works in ideal conditions, and it's not impossibly difficult to use. Deep learning is out-performing humans in many tasks, and delivering huge value for many businesses around the world, big and small. It's accessible! The technology has developed rapidly to the point where now any old analyst with basic programming skills can apply it. You no longer need PhD level maths and computer science to access deep learning! The MS data platform has what you need to start leveraging deep learning! James will demonstrate a number of ways to apply Deep Learning to common analyis tasks using SQL Server Machine Learning Services, Microsoft Cognitive Toolkit (CNTK) and Azure ML.

Speaker: James McNeill
James has worked with the Microsoft Data Platform for 17 years mostly from the Business Intelligence perspective, but also as a developer and DBA. He is studying machine learning at Adelaide University and is particularly interested in connecting advanced AI methods with practical applications.

There is always stuff going on in the PASS community. For more information about these events, please contact the group leader, Rob Farley (try emailing through lobsterpot.com.au).
