Adelaide SQL Server User Group

Welcome to the Adelaide PASS group - covering SQL Server and every aspect of the Microsoft Data Platform and Data Analytics space. You can find us on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at the Microsoft offices, Level 12, 147 Pirie St.

There's a link below to get on the mailing list. This is a mailchimp list, rather than the one that PASS handles.

We use EventBrite for meeting registrations - please look at for a list of our meetings.

Many years ago, we used, and you can see an archive of events on that site - but the Adelaide mailing list from there hasn't been used for some time.

Now, a quick word about privacy...

The details of event registrations are held with EventBrite, and I use that to update my EventBrite contacts, which is then used to update a mailchimp list for sending emails about the group. If you ever want to be removed from either my EventBrite contact list or the mailchimp list, please just let me know (rob at I do this for you and will do my best to keep your privacy private.

Our next meeting is: Wed, Feb 17 2016 12:00 to 14:00 in Adelaide.

What's all the fuss about R?
Let me show you why I'm excited about R! In my last role we coped fine without it, and I'm sure you are doing the same. In my current role, we've implemented R in a number of areas, and the impact is remarkable. Things like trend-lines have become trivial; data mining is no longer dependent on the handful of algorithms within SSAS, nor on DMX within MDX for querying; and R graphics is to die for. Libraries written by experts are available to let you implement cutting-edge technology, meaning that I can stand on the shoulders of giants for analytics and visualisations. Come along and share in my excitement about R!

Speaker: James McNeill
James McNeill - "that guy that wears a hat" - Doing BI for SA State (and to a lesser extent Federal) Government since 2003 - Mostly with SQL Server, Cognos, Business Objects - Used R since 2014 - Currently Manager of BI Solutions at South Australian Dept Education and Child Development (DECD), since late 2013 - At DECD we are an inter-disciplinary team covering reporting, research, statistics, demography and GIS. - Undergrad studies in Pure Maths and Computer Science at Uni of Adelaide - Postgrad studies in Public Policy and Management at Carnegie Mellon Uni.
